Understanding the Pain Treatment Ladder

When you're dealing with back, neck, or joint pain, it can be hard to know what kind of treatment is actually right for you. At SpineLux Pain & Ortho, we think about treatment as a ladder: start with the least invasive option that's likely to help, and only move to the next step if it's needed.

Step One: Conservative Care

For most patients, treatment starts here. This includes physical therapy, activity modification, and medication management when appropriate. Many people improve significantly at this stage alone, especially when the pain is related to muscle strain or early joint irritation.

Step Two: Interventional Procedures

When conservative care isn't enough on its own, targeted procedures like epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, or radiofrequency ablation can address pain more directly, often using image guidance for precision.

Step Three: Regenerative Medicine

For select patients, particularly those dealing with tendon, ligament, or early joint conditions who haven't found lasting relief through conservative care and interventional procedures, regenerative treatments like PRP therapy may be considered before moving to surgical options. These treatments use substances derived from your own body to support natural healing.

Step Four: Surgical Coordination

If surgery becomes part of the conversation, we work directly with your orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon, before the procedure to explore non-surgical options first, or afterward to manage any pain that persists during recovery.

Why This Approach Matters

Not every patient needs every step. The goal is always to match the treatment to the specific diagnosis and the individual patient, not to apply a one-size-fits-all protocol.
